July 7, 2014 - Wedding and Baptism Planning

Chase - I'm on already.

Mom - AAAAHHHHHH!  Let me get everybody and we'll write like the wind, Bullseye! Love you

Chase - Thanks, Mama.

Chase - Spencer just wrote, "Hi, Chase."

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

This week was pretty hectic for sure. We had a wedding and two baptisms in our area; one was ours and the other was the sisters', but I baptized for them. It was really cool!
Me with the Bride and Groom.
The wedding was absolutely crazy.  It was on Saturday.  The bride didn't show up until 7:30.  The wedding started at 6.....yeah and I was basically the wedding planner!  Everyone was asking me where she was at. I said that she's probably taking a shower hahah, which was a joke until the groom told me that she really was hah.  The wedding went super well when she finally got there. We put pink table cloths and got rose petals and spread them out on the tables and where she was going to be walking. She liked it a lot so I was happy.

The problem was there was a miscommunication and I thought they were bringing things to decorate....they weren't. I had to run to the store and buy everything and come up with the
Wedding Decorations.
idea on the spot. Never.been.so.stressed hahah Nearly died!  We were there until 9:30 with the wedding, but then we had a surprise baptism where we interviewed a teenager on Saturday and he asked if he could be baptized today. We called President and he said, "Elder, do you really need to ask me that?" I told him I get what you're saying and we baptized him when everyone was a little calmer during the wedding.  So we had a baptism during the wedding where I baptized the kid hahah. These things only happen in Brazil, literally.
Baptizing the Sisters' investigator.
Then Sunday, we baptized the bride from Saturday which was crazy, too because the elder that she wanted to baptize her showed up late, like an hour late, so we had to wait.  She is  7 months pregnant, but has a belly for 9 months and so finding baptismal clothing for her when she is short was difficult. So me and Winstanley hemmed up one we thought would work.

We also had a meeting in Santos. It was really fun. Winstanley and I have the exact same suit and tie from Mr Mac so we decided we would wear the same thing haha. We matched - same area comps, same state hahah. It was funny!
I'm doing good. It's weird to always be happy and not have to worry about your comp doing something dumb!

Love you,

Chase

July 1, 2014 - New Companion - Elder Winstanley

MAMA,
please send this to the family because I don't have much time.

I'm doing well. It was super crazy yesterday with transfers that I didn't have the opportunity to email so here I am now!  I stayed in my area which I'm pretty excited about and I got a new companion.  Elder Winstanley from Grand Junction Colorado!!!! He is super cool and an amazing missionary.  He is going to be teaching me a lot more than I teach him which honestly is what I want.  I'll be training him how to be a Zone leader and things, but it will be freaking awesome.  I've never been so excited to work. He just has a spirit about him that I just feel so much more of the Spirit already in the 12 hours that I have been with him!  He's a stud.  We are going to have a baptism this week already with Carla and Rodrigo!! They are going to get married on Saturday and baptized on Sunday. It's going to be really cool!
Unfortunately I can't tell you the Crocodile Dundee story because I want you to see the photos at the same time and I don't have my camera, so I'm going to wait until next week!  We did go fishing yesterday and ate the fish heads - it was nuts!!!!

I really liked this quote that you shared, because its so true:
It is my judgment that there are many members of this Church who have been baptized for the remission of their sins, and who have had hands laid upon their heads for the gift of the Holy Ghost, but who have never received that gift—that is, the manifestations of it. Why? Because they have never put themselves in order to receive these manifestations. They have never humbled themselves. They have never taken the steps that would prepare them for the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Therefore, they go through life without that knowledge; they are lacking in understanding. When those who are cunning and crafty in their deceit come to them criticizing the authorities of the Church and the doctrines of the Church, these weak members do not have understanding enough, information enough, and enough of the guidance of the Spirit of the Lord to resist false doctrines and teachings. They listen and think that perhaps they have made a mistake, and the first thing you know they find their way out of the Church, because they do not have understanding.

God gives us so many gifts and powers of the Spirit and we don't even know it.

Good for Dad and his miles. That's going to be awesome for him.  Elder Winstanley is a stud about working out at night jump roping for an hour, so I'm going to do it with him.  I'm nervous, but excited.

I read your email about Tate and Spencer hahah. Yeah those are your kids hahah. Don't have anyone better!

Until now I don't have anything for you to send. Thanks so much for sending the scriptures! When you send it, can you send me an email of how long it will take so I can take a guess or know when I need to talk to people to bring it?

I can't tell how happy I am to work with Elder Winstanley.  It really was an answer to my prayers.

Love,
Chase

June 23, 2014 - New Study Notebook during the World Cup

I am trying do better about doing my studies for Sister Cabral and so I bought a new notebook. When I first saw it, I immediately thought about you and Coulson.  It came with stickers, so I put them on the back of my name tag.

This is my study of the desires of our hearts that I finished this past week.

That's pretty cool with Tate getting some new shoes for running.  I will have a running buddy when I get back so I can lose all this rice and beans weight hahah.

I have heard about this stuff (ordain women) and its freaking ridiculous, but what I have learned on the mission that when someone says or does stuff like this that is wrong, it's because they don't understand the doctrine.  They haven't done the research or put in the time to understand why. Have they asked God if this is right?  If they would, they would know in the exact same way that they joined the church, through the holy ghost that it is wrong.  Sorry got on a rant right there haha,

It's going to be so cool to see Jarek passing the sacrament. He's getting so old!

My new sweater I bought for $12.
I sill laugh out loud with some of the stuff that you say. Just reminds me how good it is to be home with the family.   The Brazil game is today so our P-day is cut short, so I need to go soon, but I love you and thank you for getting those scriptures for me.  I will put them to good use!

June 16, 2014 - World Cup and Obedience

MOM!,
Did you see that mom i put you in front hahah I love you Both!
DAD!
Happy late fathers Day!! I Love you so much!

I'm doing  pretty good. It's nuts how it will be 9 months this week!  Time goes by pretty fast to say the least!  The world cup is crazy. We can't watch any of the games, the Lord is testing us haha. The First Presidency said that we aren't allowed to, so we don't.

Brazil is a nut case when it comes to their soccer.  We have to stay in our house on the Brazilian game days because of safety issues and what the apostles ordered, but when Brazil scores, we always know because basically the entire town goes nuts and you can hear screams for like 5 minutes after every goal.  It's been good too, because we get to relax a little bit and study a little more!  I have been addicted to the Netherlands team. That's who I want to win, either them Brazil or Germany.  The United States has the hardest group in the cup, so I don't think they will pass the first round.  All the members were ticked that Marcelo had the own goal; they don't want him to play tomorrow hahah.

I'm glad Utah went good for the week with McKaylee.  This will be great for her to rely on the Lord.  She didn't stop talking about the laptop she got haha. She was pretty excited.
In the "jungle" part of our area, hahahaha.

The week is going good. We stopped teaching a lot of people because they just give a lot of excuses for not coming to church.   They understand and keep all the commandments, but they just don't want to go to church, so we basically said to them, "We can't lose our time teaching you if you don't want to come to church. You are always welcome, you know where its at, if you need anything, call thanks." TCHAU! hah I think I said some form of this for 4 different families which was hard because now we have to start over finding new families and people.
Spencer sounds like he is liking the track. I'm super proud of Tate and all that she is doing. She is going to love cross country - they always had the best friendships in school.

My Mission President is really trying to teach obedience to our mission and he gave us some cool quotes that go like this:

First I obey, then I understand.  We have to first obey the Lords commandments to understand the blessings that come after it.
As individuals we are strong, together with God, we are invincible.  We have to understand that God wants to help us and with him it literally is impossible to fail. Just like in the quote by Pres Uchtdorf, there is no chance to fail when we are on the Lord's side.

Elder Veiga is difficult and sometimes I don't know how I've dealt with it. I don't even know - lots of prayers and a lot of love.

How is working out in the morning coming along?  I have been making an effort to work out in the morning i have lost a little weight but not much.

No, I just buy the toothpaste and deodorant here; it's a lot easier, but something that would be cool for you to send to me would be 2 paisley ties?!

The weather here is nice. If it gets to 60, everyone here has winter jackets and sweats on while the Americans still have their short sleeve shirts on haha, but I think I will need to buy a sweater.

I'm hoping to get transferred in July, but it's what the Lord wants and nothing more.

I've been listening a lot to the Nashville tribute band that sings songs about the church, missions and Joseph Smith. It's super good and it's the closest thing I can get to country on the mission! haha

Love Chase

June 9 - District Conference broadcast from SLC

Yeah, it's a been little hectic today, but I finally got back on to write you guys!  This week was a little disappointing, but we are just trying to have success.  It's been interesting to see what is success for me now as I'm in a different kind of area.  The highlight of my week though, was definitely our district conference.  We had the opportunity to have it broadcasted from Salt Lake, so it was super cool!  We got to listen to Elder Scott and Elder Ballard.

These are the notes that Sister Cabral took. I had the majority of this stuff down, but she just makes it seem so much prettier and I think you and her are so much alike!  You both love planning and planners and this kind of stuff haha.
Our Heavenly Father didn’t put us on this earth to become weak, but to have infinite success.
-        We can come closer to Him with confidence

-        Don’t rush through your conversations with Heavenly Father, reserve time to share your feelings and to hear His answers, that way you will be able to become what He wants.

-        Recognize answers to your prayers:

1.       Peace, comfort, safety—we know that the choice we made was right.
2.       Discomfort—we know that the choice is wrong.
3.       Nothing—to grow and exercise faith in Him. We exercise faith by being obedient to His commandments. When the Lord doesn’t give us an answer, we must ACT. We must also thank Him for trusting in us. IF we are (1) living worthy and (2) asking with confidence, God won’t let us go far without helping us. He wants us to act so that we can have necessary experiences.

-        If it is right, the confirmation will come in small inspirations. The feeling of peace is the most common testimony.

-        Sometimes the Lord makes us act so that we can exercise our faith before we receive an answer. That way, our character will strengthen and our faith will grow.

-        Rarely will the answer come while we are praying. Instead, it will inspire us when the Spirit can touch our mind and our heart effectively in quiet moments.

-        When we err and think that we aren’t worthy to pray, we must pray to ask forgiveness so that we can be cleaned and become worthy to pray. Subtle whispers will show us the steps that we must follow to become clean through the Atonement.

-        The most important principle in prayer is GRATITUDE. The sincere recognition fills our heart until it overflows with gratitude. Shouldn’t we thank Heavenly Father for the gift of prayer?

-        “Everything that you ask the Father will be given if it is for your good.”

-        Your life will be easier if you accept that everything that God does is for your well-being—whether you be rich or poor, free or enslaved.

-        He will always answer with what is best for your.

-        Elder Ballard – Teach each other with love.

-        Our work will not be complete until EVERYBODY has had the opportunity to hear the gospel and all of the members go to the temple.

-        Use technology wisely.

-        Have calm time to meditate, to have a personal interview with yourself, to hear the whispers of the Holy Ghost, to find peace.

-        During the sacrament, concentrate on the Spirit of the Lord. For this brief moment, be with Him.

-        The temple is a wonderful place to hear answers to prayers. (Your house has to be a temple.)

-        Battle against pornography – it is physically, mentally and spiritually destructive. It leads to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It is fatal – it destroys individuals and families. Like venom, it kills the body and mind. If you are involved, seek help with your priesthood leader and lds.org.

-        Always study The Family: A Proclamation to the World. Marriage and family are under attack. Great blessings flow when we obey God. Pray for government leaders so that they follow the commandments of God.

-        Who will separate us from the love of God? Tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or hunger, or nakedness, or danger, or the sword? As it is written: 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8: 36-39)

-        Thanks to the love of Christ, everything can be fixed. Invite everybody to enjoy this love.

I'm sure this week will be busy getting McKaylee all set up to stay.  I was just thinking now that you and dad got shafted....two kids left the house in 9 months, that's rough!!!  I'm sure dad is taking it a little rougher because you got to stay.

I'm glad  McKaylee had a good last week though and that she was able to say goodbye to the people that she needed to!  I think this is definitely the right path for her to progress in the right direction.

For things that I have been craving, the licorice was on point last time hah, but mac and cheese, not really. I tried to make home made mac and cheese one day and it worked a little bit, but it's not as good as yours obviously, but it was edible hahha.  Beef jerky would be cool as well. I cant think of anything else.  Can you send me the recipe for the Cookie Dough Brownies? I want to try to make them next P-day.

I think we really all have the same testimony that is said in 1 Nefi 1  "Having been born of goodly parents".

I started doing something similar with my studying - I sing or hum a hymn before I read.  It has helped me transfer my thoughts to the gospel and feel the Spirit and its whispers.

I watched a movie this morning about the life of Emma Smith - it was super cool, felt the Spirit a ton, but the thing that I liked most is a quote she said, "Strength isn't something you have, it's something you find, with the help of God, day by day, hour by hour."

My companion has been difficult.  He struggles with the way our  mission does things - rules and the way we teach, but then when he tries to do it his way, it doesn't work.  I've learned to just be patient and let him learn by himself because he doesn't listen to me at all.  I told President Cabral that I was having some troubles with him and he just told me, "Elder, I know, but unfortunately someone has to be his trainer, someone has to suffer through the first couple months with Elder Veiga and you were the one the Lord chose so that you could be better." I was like, thanks, President, but then how do I help him and basically he just said, "Prayer is a good place to start." It has been getting better, but it's been a tester for sure.

I'm hoping that we can have some success. I've really been focusing on the sacrifice that it takes to have success. It has been really humbling, but we are having a little bit at a time.

June 3, 2014 - Off to Santos for Leadership Council

I don't have a ton of time today. I'm going to try to write you tomorrow morning because I have to go to Santos again today which is a 5 hour bus ride, so I'm not too excited!
This past week was good; we just cant figure out why our investigators don't want to go to church.  They understand all the commandments, say they will keep them, but they are missing the part that says will you go to church haha, but we are getting there.
My companion is getting better, but the whole ward is starting to see that he is stubborn and now when he does or says something, everyone just looks at me and is like, you need to tell him he can't do that, but I am just letting him learn by their looks haha.  He just doesn't want to change from how he was to be a missionary yet.

I love you. I hope I can email you tomorrow!

Love, Chase to FOCO and back
